J & A Kay Ltd is proud to celebrate its 80th anniversary. Marking eight decades of innovation, resilience, and a deep-rooted commitment to British manufacturing.
The company was founded in 1946 by Joe and Annie Kay, shortly after Joe returned from serving in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. It was during his time in the Navy that Joe first learned the trade of engraving, a skill that would go on to form the foundation of the business. With determination and a strong work ethic, Joe and Annie began building what would become a proud family enterprise.
In 1958, the business moved to Cotton Hall Mill in Darwen, the location that has remained central to its identity and growth ever since.
Through generations of dedication and forward-thinking leadership, J & A Kay Ltd has continually evolved to meet the changing demands of industry. What began as a small engraving business expanded into vacuum forming and plastic fabrication, establishing the company as one of the leading plastic manufacturers in the North West.
Managing Director, David Kay, joined the business at just 18 years old, working alongside his brothers Bill and Joe. Together, they helped drive the company forward, embracing new technologies and diversifying its capabilities, while staying true to the values the business was built upon.
Now in its third generation, J & A Kay Ltd continues to go from strength to strength. The company proudly supplies a wide range of industries, including automotive, engineering, construction, retail, and more. Maintaining a reputation for quality, reliability, and long-term customer partnerships.
As the business celebrates this significant milestone, it represents more than longevity, it reflects a story of family, craftsmanship, and resilience passed down through generations.
Rosie Kay, Company Director and third-generation member of the Kay family, reflected on the milestone:
“Celebrating 80 years is incredibly special for our family and for the business. Knowing that it all began with my grandfather learning his trade while serving in the Navy makes it even more meaningful. What started from those early skills has grown into something we are all immensely proud of today.
It’s a testament to the hard work, resilience, and commitment of every generation, as well as the amazing people who have supported us along the way. As we look to the future, we’re focused on continuing that legacy, investing in innovation, supporting our customers, and ensuring the business thrives for generations to come.”
The company recognises that its success over the past eight decades has been built on strong, lasting relationships. It extends its sincere thanks to its dedicated employees, loyal customers, and trusted suppliers, without whom this milestone would not have been possible.
Looking ahead, J & A Kay Ltd remains committed to growth, innovation, and maintaining the values that have defined the business for 80 years, as it continues to build a strong and sustainable future.
